Presbyterian Support Upper South Island, like several other Presbyterian Support regions, has adopted a new name for their services for older people "Enliven". The focus is on positive ageing. Presbyterian Support Upper South Island Enliven positive ageing services provide older people with individually-tailored support to remain in their own homes for longer and to achieve other goals that are important to them.

Services include social work, counselling, Support Link and home support services, day activity programmes (some for people with memory loss), and falls prevention.

They are available to everyone in the community whatever their background, their religion, their ethnicity or their beliefs. You don't have to be a Presbyterian to be supported by, work for or support Presbyterian Support.

Government subsidies are available for much of this work; when they are not available, fees are charged in full or in part.

Counselling: The main purpose of counselling is to help you sort things out for yourself and come to your own understandings and decisions so you can face the future with new hope and confidence. Talking things over with someone can be useful.

Presbyterian Support also offers a specialised counselling service for people affected by dementia, and for their families and carers.

Social Work: Christchurch: For people 65 years and over services include assessment and information, co-ordination of support services, counselling, advocacy, liaison with other agencies or health professionals, support for carers, elder abuse intervention. Home visits can be made.

Group Learning: Groups are held at the Campbell Centre or can be provided for church or community groups in your area. They help address issues such as caring for ageing parents, helping you to good health, grief support, depression, positive ageing, relationships, and legal matters.

Falls Prevention: (Christchurch, Akaroa, Mid Canterbury, North Canterbury):
Group classes are offere basedd on Tai Chi exercise to improve strength and balance and aid in the prevention of falls. Home-based exercise programmes are available for older, frailer clients.

Activities include singing, cards, cooking, exercises, games, gardening, indoor games, minibus, music, newspaper reading, pool table, and reading.

Totara Club: Totara Clubs in Riccarton and Rangiora are day programmes for older people open Monday to Friday (Riccarton) and Monday to Saturday (Rangiora). Totara Clubs provide a place to meet together, share a meal, outings, entertainment and a range of activities, where old acquaintances are renewed and new friendships made. They have experienced, caring staff who are assisted by enthusiastic volunteers. Transport is arranged.

SupportLink: Support Link is a new service in Canterbury, supporting Older People and Carers living with dementia.

Support Link is accessed though an assessment by the Community Assessment teams or Psychiatric Service for the Elderly in Ashburton Christchurch and Rangiora
How people are supported is then decided between the client and the Support Link co-ordinator, with an individual plan setting out what the client wants to achieve. A support worker assists the client on a weekly basis.
